E3 2019 – Apex Legends responds to fan discontent with Season 2 Battle Pass improvements
Calling the response to the Apex Legends Season 1 Battle Pass ‘fan discontent’ feels like an understatement…
Gamers are a passionate lot, and they weren’t shy about letting Respawn know that the first edition of the Battle Pass – a system implemented to allow players to unlock rewards in a pair of progression tracks: free and paid – wasn’t up to snuff. The rewards did strike me as pretty weak, with a large number of badges, stat trackers, and banners, and very few weapon or character skins.
Leveling up was also slow, though that was tweaked after player feedback.
The grind improves in Season 2, with the addition of Daily and Weekly Challenges to help gamers level up their Battle Pass, and the rewards improve as well. Badges and stat tracker rewards were stripped out of the paid progression path, and there’ll be three new content categories to fill those spots.
A trio of Legendary items will also be added to the Battle Pass, unlocking one every 25 levels of the paid track – starting with the first level and providing a total of five Legendaries to those who hit level 100. That level 100 Legendary is an evolving weapon skin, and it will unlock a special recoloured version if the player makes it to level 110 before the season’s end.
Not enough? Voice line rewards are also being taken out, replaced with crafting metal, a resource that will – once 1,200 have been gathered – allow players to craft the specific Legendary item that they want, so you don’t have to rely on the random number generator to get that special item.
All in all, it seems like a solid step up from Season 1 to Season 2, and there’s still more to be revealed before the new season starts.
