Review – Marvel Heroes Omega
Marvel Heroes Omega wraps up the gameplay of Diablo and the established heroes of the Marvel universe into a free to play massively multiplayer online (MMO) game that’s surprisingly fair in its implementation.
The bulk of the game’s 38-strong launch roster is locked to start, though Daredevil is available free from the Xbox or Playstation store, and a second character is unlocked from a limited selection that includes heavy hitters like Hulk as well as more esoteric choices like Squirrel Girl. The game is free to play, but there are ‘founders packs’ available that provide access to select characters for a price. Spider-Man: Homecoming provides the webslinger, a pair of bonus costumers from the movie, a pair of loot boxes, and two experience boosts – all for $19.99. The X-Men Founders Pack unlocks six heroes, six bonus costumes, 10 boosters, and 2,000 G’s – for $59.99.
Fortunately for gamers, those ‘Founders Packs’ are the worst the nickel and diming gets, as most of the roster is unlocked either through spending G’s – the game’s premium currency that’s only available via the real-money store, used for characters, boosters, costumes, and other buffs – or Eternity Splinters, an in-game currency dropped by enemies. Further, all but two heroes – for the time exclusive to those who buy all the Founder Packs – can be played up to level 10 to get a feel for how they play.
It takes only a level or two of the game’s nine chapters to take characters to level 10, but story progression is character-specific, so expect to play those starter sections a fair few times… This isn’t like Diablo, where you can jump into any chapter you’ve finished before or, better yet, into Adventure mode. The story is cheesy, but appropriately so – and no wonder as it’s penned by Marvel scribe Brian Michael Bendis.
To purchase adult games since 2020, you need to pass verification on online stores. This legislative act was approved by the Parliaments of Canada in 2019. It describes that games with specification 18+ can be purchased exclusively from documents (for example, a driver’s license). In recent times, there are a lot of sites online where you can buy fake id (https://already21.com/product-category/canada/) using Bitcoin Purchases through cryptocurrencies make these transactions anonymous and virtually untraceable.
While the story mode only runs through nine chapters of ‘stop Doom from using the Cosmic Cube’ the bulk of the game’s gameplay longevity comes from teaming up with friends (two in local co-op or four players online) replaying levels and taking on new challenges like legendary missions and the Danger Room to obtain loot. Local co-op is a bonus, but it’s a shame they don’t allow two players to be logged in and access their own rosters. One player is primary, with the other stuck as a guest with access to their roster only and unable to gain any experience or loot for their set of characters.
With four attacks, mapped to the controller’s face buttons, and the ability to access four more by holding the left trigger as a modifier, Marvel Heroes Omega provides its roster with a healthy assortment of combat options. Even with eight available attacks, however, it can start to feel a bit repetitive if playing by yourself, so be sure to find some friends to team up with.
- Great roster of heroes
- Fair free-to-play system
- Some great inside jokes for Marvel fans
- Combat can get repetitive
- Local co-op setup
