Review – The Surge DLC: The Good, the Bad, and the Augmented
The Surge was a surprise hit for Deck 13 when it released back in early 2017, and the DLC (downloadable content) made available for it has been every bit as surprising. First there was the A Walk in the Park pack, which threw gamers into a full-fledged (and deadly) amusement park. Now it’s time to tackle the Wild West with the new DLC: The Good, the Bad, and the Augmented.
This time around gamers – via a game show called Frontier Riders – get to explore a testing area that’s modeled after the Wild West, created and operated by The Supervisor – a guy who has apparently gone a little overboard with his obsession with old west movies. The Supervisor is more of a prop than a story driver, however, with very little in the way of storyline advancement here. This DLC is dedicated to the gameplay and the grind, with a hub section that allows access to nine episodes, each having a pair of stages and then a final boss battle.
To add some tension, gamers can’t take lethal damage during the stages leading up to the boss battle or they’re dumped back to the hub area to start over. The developers aren’t completely heartless though, and during the stages leading up to the boss, players can pick up a Lucky Coin to allow a second shot at the end battle should they die on their first attempt.
If it sounds a little light on content, Deck 13 might have agreed as they upped the ante with the ability to add modifiers to battle like increased speed, energy gain, no healing, etc… Use these modifiers to increase the difficulty and beating the level will offer increased rewards – and it’ll take churning through levels with multiple modifiers on in order to earn the best armor and weapons out of the half-dozen armor sets and over two dozen weapons available.
