Merge Games Unveils ‘Smalland’ at Future Games Show

The trend in gaming is to take everything and make it bigger, but ‘Smalland’ from Merge Games is going in the opposite direction and making things smaller – way smaller.

Explore familiar environments from an all-new perspective in this multiplayer survival adventure that offers extensive crafting and building elements. While this might sound similar to Obsidian Entertainment’s ‘Grounded’ the development team at Merge Games has some big goals set for ‘Smalland’ with a day-night cycle, weather, and changing seasons all in the plans.

With both co-op PVE and PVP modes, ‘Smalland’ is looking to take a big swing for such a small game. Expect to hear a lot more on it before it launches on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2021.

New Details Emerge for Open World Survival Title Smalland at the Future Games Show

Merge Games Senior Game Designer Kev Harrison gives the Future Games Show an exclusive dive into the upcoming multiplayer survival title.

Manchester, UK – August 28th, 2020 —Merge Games is thrilled to unveil new details about their open world survival title, Smalland. Since Merge took over development of the highly anticipated title in 2019, they are ecstatic to reveal some new information on what to expect from the massive adventure with a brand-new video that recently debuted on the Future Games Show at Gamescom!

Diving into combat, crafting, building, and customisation, Merge reveals brand new gameplay and details of the epic landscapes you will be able to explore. Featuring dynamic, ever-changing environments where creatures react to each other as well as the world around them, Smalland sees players emerge into a giant overgrown world where they’re shrunk down to the size of a pebble.

Changing weather, rotating seasons, and a full day/night cycle all add unique challenges and are another massive feature of Smalland, as players explore across an expansive open world environment. In the video, Kev also dives into customisation detailing some of the ways players can adjust their character and skills to be uniquely them, and align themselves with new creatures to gain abilities — which can protect them, or move them up the food chain!

Coming to Consoles and PC next year, check out the Merge Facebook and Merge Discord page as well as add the game to your Steam wishlist here for more news and community announcements soon!

PVE Crossplay For All ‘World War Z’ Players, Starting Today

World War Z was a surprise hit when it launched last year, and the development team at Saber Interactive have kept that momentum up by releasing a steady stream of updates, the latest of which – the Dronemaster update – hit today and brought some major changes to the game.

First off, players on any platform can now party up thanks to full PvE crossplay being enabled for the first time. Now it doesn’t matter if your friends have a PS4 and you play on PC or Xbox One, you can finally get your game on with them.

The update also includes a new class, the first new class to be added to the game since it launched, the titular Dronemaster. This new class includes a customizable drone that stuns nearby zombies and can be geared towards either offensive or support roles.

Want more? How about a new weapon, a grenade launcher for taking out those pesky packs of undead? The ACW-20 is a low-caliber semi-auto launcher that should prove extremely effective against the horde rushes, but keep those friendlies back from the blast area…

Here’s the press release:

World War Z Adds Full PvE Crossplay, New Playable Class & More

Play the hit co-op shooter with your friends wherever they are on PlayStation®4, Xbox One & PC!

MAPLEWOOD, N.J. — July 22, 2020 — Saber Interactive and Focus Home Interactive have announced that the “Dronemaster” update is available to download for free today in World War Z, the best-selling co-op shooter inspired by Paramount Pictures’ blockbuster film. This latest update introduces full* PvE crossplay support across PlayStation®4, Xbox One and PC via the Epic Games Store, letting you party up in co-op with friends no matter what platform they’re on.

World War Z has also released its first new playable class since it launched last year: the Dronemaster. This highly versatile character comes with its own personal drone which stuns zombies when they get too close for comfort. You can customize your drone in the perk tree to suit your play style and squad comp: increase its offensive capabilities to make it more lethal in an assault, or raise its defensive powers to better support your team.

In addition, today’s update features a new rare weapon pick-up with its own upgrade tree for your armory: the ACW-20. This low-caliber, semi-automatic grenade launcher is perfect for mopping up tightly packed groups, but watch out for friendly fire! There’s also a variety of new weapon upgrades, perk rebalancing, fixes and quality-of-life improvements.

Finally, players can grab World War Z’s latest premium DLC today: the “Signature Weapons Pack,” which includes four unique weapon skins for the game’s main characters. This DLC is free for Season Pass and GOTY Edition owners. It is also available for standalone purchase on PlayStation®4 and Xbox One.

Powered by Saber’s dynamic Swarm EngineWorld War Z delivers a thrilling social play experience from the comfort of your home. Survive against hundreds of fast-moving, bloodthirsty zombies at a time with six distinct classes and an arsenal of deadly weapons, explosives, turrets and traps. Outlive the dead through intense four-player co-op campaign missions around the world, and battle both zombies and real human opponents in competitive, team-based Players vs. Players vs. Zombies (PvPvZ) multiplayer.

June’s War Table Stream For Marvel’s Avengers Dives Into Details

Marvel’s Avengers got off on the wrong foot with gamers thanks to some fairly low quality leaked footage, but it has managed to look better and better each time it’s shown – a bit of a rarity in game development.

That trend continued with the first War Table stream today, with new revelations on both co-op gameplay and hero customization…and I have to admit I really want to play this game even more now.

There were still some areas I have questions about – like what the UI during gameplay will look like, but it showed a bit of what could be legit gameplay, so maybe that’s already answered. The framerate didn’t seem great at times, but it’s a ways from launch yet so there’s certainly plenty of time to sort that out.

Here’s the press release:

NEW MARVEL’S AVENGERS WAR TABLE DIGITAL STREAM DELVES DEEP INTO THE GAME

Today, SQUARE ENIX® released the first Marvel’s Avengers War Table digital stream providing the most in-depth look yet at Marvel’s Avengers.

The Marvel’s Avengers War Table offers players a world premiere look at new trailers, including a first showing of new Thor gameplay in his, “Once an Avenger” campaign hero mission. This playthrough follows The God of Thunder as he battles enemies with powerful lightning strikes, unleashes a barrage of Mjolnir attacks, and performs many other signature heroic moves solo and with AI Avengers teammates.

The stream also offers more details on the game’s central villain, MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing), who Marvel fans will recognize as the artificially mutated, super intelligent overlord of AIM (Advanced Idea Mechanics).

Lastly, Crystal Dynamics revealed brand-new information about War Zones, the game’s team-based missions, including their structure and how the Avengers become even more powerful when working together. War Zones can be played either solo with AI hero companions, or in co-op groups of up to four players. The stream also revealed more of the game’s world, from AIM’s research facilities to a derelict Helicarrier, all of which can be explored by players to earn new rewards, gear, and experience points.

Marvel’s Avengers offers players a truly rich experience, with a combination of Hero Missions and War Zones. Hero Missions are single-player only and are part of the initial Campaign. They are designed to showcase each hero’s unique abilities as you reassemble your growing roster. War Zones can be played solo or with a group of up to four players as any Hero in your roster. Each mission dynamically scales based on the team size and player level.

Players in Marvel’s Avengers will also be able to customize Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in a number of ways. While each Super Hero will play true to their unique power sets, each will have the flexibility to play differently based on the gear you equip them with and the skills you enable, so no two player’s heroes will play in exactly the same way. Each hero has dynamic combo systems, Heroic moves, an intrinsic ability, and signature move sets to unlock and customize – many inspired by classic moves from the 80 years of history in all media, others crafted as originals just for this game.

Players also customize these iconic Super Heroes with classic, fan-favorite, and all-new original outfits inspired by over 80-years of Marvel history, including Iron Man’s suit from the 2014 Original Sin storyline, or Thor’s Donald Blake identity, which is a nod to an alias of Thor’s who first appeared in 1962’s Journey into Mystery issue 83.

Marvel’s Avengers is an ambitious game, starting with a global high-stakes race to rebuild the Avengers. But that’s just the beginning. To ensure a continuing heroic experience for all players, the narrative of Marvel’s Avengers expands, and threats escalate with each new post-release Super Hero, region and story arc delivered to players at no additional cost once they own the core game.

Finally, in case you missed it, earlier this week SQUARE ENIX announced that Marvel’s Avengers will be available on PlayStation®5 and Xbox Series X when the consoles launch in Holiday 2020. Players who own the current-gen version of the game will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version at no additional cost, regardless if players are moving from PlayStation® 4 to PlayStation 5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X. Those moving their saves to next-gen will transfer their player profiles and progression so they can pick up right where they left off. In addition, cross-gen play will be supported so PS5 players will be able to play with their friends on PS4 and Xbox Series X players will be connected with their friends on Xbox One.

Marvel’s Avengers will release simultaneously for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC on h September 4, 2020. The game is currently rated T (Teen) by the ESRB.

DwarfHeim Multiplayer Beta Signups Now Available

Do you like trailers that just keep getting better as they go on? Well check out this epic trailer for DwarfHeim, where the action and the narration continually ramp up until you just have to hit the ‘apply to beta’ button!

The multiplayer beta runs June 19-21st, with the game slated for release in the fall. Take a shot at this fantasy RTS (real-time strategy) game and see if it lives up to the trailer.

Here’s the press release:

Epic RTS DwarfHeim opens multiplayer beta sign up TODAY!

Dive into the fierce world of DwarfHeim with the PC Gamer Showcase and test your multi-player mettle!

Manchester, UK June 13th, 2020. After seeing DwarfHeim featured on the PC Gaming Show, players around the globe are eager to build, defend, mine and manage their powerful Dwarven City. Boasting epic Multiplayer RTS battles and single-player action, the world of DwarfHeim puts out the call for players to sign-up for the next multi-player clash. Nordic developers, Pineleaf Studio, welcome all players who feel inspired by the trailer to answer this call.

Battle-hardened RTS players, alongside Dwarven recruits new to the genre, now have a chance to deep dive into the mechanics and features of the world of DwarfHeim. Sign-ups for this fresh multiplayer beta can be found HERE and it runs from June 19th – June 21st. Budding players can also march over to the official DwarfHeim Discord Channel (discord.gg/dwarfheim) and co-ordinate with other blossoming Dwarven strategists.

The developers’ new narrative trailer above, which just premiered live on the PC Gamer Show,is an exciting call to arms that introduces players to the world of DwarfHeim.! DwarfHeim innovates within the genre with co-op and team-focused gameplay that will appeal to gamers who have wanted to conquer arm-in-arm with their friends.

DwarfHeim’s asymmetric co-op style means players stay within their chosen class for the duration of a game. All players and classes share the common goal of growing their Dwarven Clan. They also pool and share their resources: Warriors, Builders, and Miners must work together; and agree on what’s best for the group. DwarfHeim’s unique focus on team gameplay encourages players to work together; a Builder may need stone for walls, but the Miner needs wood to refine the stone and build underground structures. Communication is key and sacrifice may be required.

DwarfHeim is currently in development by Pineleaf Studio and is scheduled to be published by Merge this fall. Immerse yourself in the world of DwarfHeim today on Steam and add the game to your wishlist here

Keep an eye out on the DwarfHeim Steam Community and official DwarfHeim Discord server for upcoming developer stream announcements and to hear the latest news from the Dwarven battlefields!

Review – Zombie Army 4: Dead War

There’s not a lot of subtlety in Zombie Army 4: Dead War, available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, which really shouldn’t be surprising to anyone who watches literally any of the promotional material or even just reads the game’s title. As one of a handful of characters – including some exclusive to the game’s season pass – you take to the streets of Europe and take down zombies…tons of zombies.

To be fair to the developers at Rebellion, there IS a story here, and as schlocky as it is, I must admit I find it hilariously engaging. The basis is that Hitler, known for having a fondness for the occult, summoned zombies to fill out his armies and dominate the world – events that happened in the past games. In Dead War we discover that our triumph in the last game (available now as part of the Zombie Army Trilogy collection release) has taken away the commander of the zombies but hasn’t worked to eliminate the threat entirely.

So back to the streets of Europe we go, taking on multi-stage missions in what we’ll call ‘wide-linear’ levels that allow for some exploration but aren’t quite what you’d call ‘open world’ in nature. You’re given specific missions to taken on, with side missions like helping innocents being attacked popping up as filler from time to time. There are also some collectibles to gather, if you’re into that kind of thing, and goals to complete, like using a Takedown to kill a specific zombie type, to unlock ‘stickers’ you can collect.

There’s even a progression system that allows players to upgrade their weapons in mundane ways like doing more damage or reloading faster, or more unique ways like add special modifiers: electricity or explosives, for example. There’s also a perk system layered on top, with perks (categorized as Offensive, Defensive, or Other) that allow the player to build up their character directly. Perhaps you’d like to have more stamina so you can outrun zombies, or maybe it’s more attractive to take less melee damage – both options in the Defensive category.

Completing objectives like finishing a level without going under half stamina – for the previously mentioned stamina perk – unlock the perk for use, and then you can level it up to make it more effective by completing still more objectives.

The result is that your character and weapons become far more deadly the more you play, which allows you to take on the hardest difficulty levels or just have a lot more fun with the easier ones. Zombie Army 4, as the title kind of implies, is just a crazy ball of ‘dumb fun’ – sniping zombies, setting traps, throwing grenades…it’s no-excuses mindless fun and a blast to play solo or in co-op.

The game allows four-player online co-op, and I highly recommend it, but you’ll still have a good time solo. After all, if you can’t have a good time with a game that allows you to reanimate a zombie shark so it’ll chew up zombie Nazis, I don’t think we can be friends.

Take On The Terminator in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint

It seems like just yesterday when the Predator invaded Ghost Recon Wildlands, and now another famous movie villain is going after the gamers in a Tom Clancy game. This time around it’s Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and the villain is none other than the Terminator.
The free event kicks off January 29th and features “multiple mission settings, enemies, and dialogues” that were inspired by the 1984 classic robot vs. humanity flick. Gamers can take it on solo, but you’re going to have a lot more fun if you go after the Terminator with friends.
The pair of narrative missions will be sticking around once the event wraps up, February 6th, so don’t worry if you can’t get online in the next week to take part.
Here’s the press release:

THE TERMINATOR INVADES TOM CLANCY’S GHOST RECON® BREAKPOINT

Defeat the Terminator in Two Unique Narrative Missions and Earn Exclusive Rewards

Montreal — January 28, 2019 — Today, Ubisoft announced a partnership with Studiocanal that will bring the Terminator to Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Breakpoint with the release of a free event featuring multiple mission settings, enemies and dialogues inspired from the original 1984 The Terminator movie. The event will be available for all players starting tomorrow 9am UTC on the Xbox One family of devices including the Xbox One X, PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Windows PC, UPLAY+, Ubisoft’s subscription service,* and Stadia, the new generation gaming platform from Google.

Entirely playable in solo or co-op, the Terminator Live Event will have players gear up and face an unexpected threat from the future in a new story arc taking place in a new location on Auroa.

Two main narrative missions will be introduced, during which players will have to rescue and partner with Rasa Aldwin, a woman coming from the future, in the hope of stopping the Terminators’ plans. These two missions will be available starting January 29 and February 1, respectively, and will remain in-game once the event ends. In addition, players will be able to face the challenging T-800 cyborgs in daily warfare and interception missions.

Upon completing missions during the live event, January 29 to February 6, players will be rewarded with exclusive items inspired by The Terminator, including the movie’s iconic punk outfit, as well as exclusive new Terminator weapons and vehicles. Besides the rewards granted by completing the event’s missions, players will be able to further customize their Ghosts with two Terminator-inspired packs, allowing players to fully transform into the Terminator or Kyle Reese in-game.

The Terminator Live Event comes as part of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint’s Episode I, and follows the launch of the first raid in franchise history as well as a series of free updates that brought major improvements to the game. The game will continue to receive regular updates in the coming months, in line with the commitment made in the Moving Forward letter to expand and improve the game based on player feedback.

Crystal Dynamics Releases 'Marvel's Avengers' Game Overview Video

A new video from Crystal Dynamics, the development team behind Marvel’s Avengers, was released today that delves into some of the areas gamers have been asking about, like gameplay, mission variety, and character customization.
So far I’m loving the sounds of it, with single player Hero Missions that are part of the campaign and Warzone Missions that can be taken on with up to three friends – or you can choose to go it alone. I had a blast soloing some of the group content in Destiny, so I hope Marvel’s Avengers has the same sort of ‘super challenging, but doable if you’re careful’ setup for the Warzone Missions.
And if not…I can always invite some friends.
Also super exciting, at least for Hulk fans, is a shot of Joe Fixit. Outside of the Professor Hulk, he’s hands down my favourite of the jade giant’s iterations so I’m happy to see he looks great in the game.
Here’s the press release:

GAME OVERVIEW VIDEO DELVES DEEPER INTO MARVEL’S AVENGERS

Finally, in case you missed it, earlier this month we revealed that fan-favorite Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel, is the latest playable Super Hero in Marvel’s Avengers. Players begin their journey as Kamala Khan and learn the origins of her extraordinary powers. As the story expands, Kamala plays an essential role in bringing the disbanded Avengers back together. As each Super Hero rejoins the roster, players must master their unique abilities, rebuild and customize the team to face increasingly evolving threats only the Avengers together can defeat.

'Minecraft Dungeons' Developer Diary Released

Minecraft Dungeons is an action-adventure set in the Minecraft universe, allowing players (and up to three of their friends) to explore in a Diablo-style 3/4 overhead perspective.
There isn’t a lot of info out on the game yet, but with a 2020 release date I’d expect that to change fairly soon and that starts with a developer diary. Check it out!

'Darksiders Genesis' Launch Dates Announced

Darksiders Genesis, the top-down action-adventure change of pace for the Darksiders franchise, will be arriving on PC and Google Stadia first, with a December 5th, 2019 release date announced today.
Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One gamers will need to wait until February 14th, 2020 to try their hand as the fourth of the Four Horseman, Strife.
I was sold on this one from the first footage. It’s not often a series can jump between genres successfully, or even tries to make that jump, but Airship Syndicate seems to have this nailed.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 already features a huge array of content, but that’ll grow significantly October 15th with the arrival of Episode 2 – Pentagon: The Last Castle.
The update – the largest title update for the game so far – includes a slew of new things to do, including new main missions, two new classified assignments, a new PVP mode, a new specialization, and a wide variety of gameplay improvements and additions.
Sounds like there’s no better time to return to the game and knock the rust off your guns before the October 15th release!

Here’s the press release:

Tom Clancy’s The Division® 2: “Episode 2 – Pentagon: The Last Castle” will Release on October 15

Biggest Title Update to Date Includes New Main Missions, Latest Specialization, Major Fixes and Improvements, New PvP Mode and More

Montreal — October 9, 2019 — Ubisoft announced October 15 as the release date for its latest content update for the live open world game Tom Clancy’s The Division® 2. In addition, later this month, players who did not have a chance to play The Division 2 yet will have the opportunity to try the game for free.**
Title Update 6 highlights The Division 2’s biggest title update to date for players, featuring “Episode 2 – Pentagon: The Last Castle,” a variety of game improvements and a new Conflict PvP mode. Episode 2 is available for Year 1 pass holders and UPLAY+* subscribers on October 15 (October 22 for all players). All changes and improvements, as well as the new mode, are available for all players on October 15.

The latest episode in The Division 2’s Year 1 free content plan features escalation in Washington D.C. for Division Agents, as Black Tusk forces continue to wreak havoc around the city. In Episode 2, players must fight to solve the ongoing outbreak crisis. It will be up to Agents to uncover the secrets inside the Pentagon before it falls into the hands of The Black Tusk.
Content featured in “Episode 2 – Pentagon: The Last Castle” includes:
Two New Main Missions
At the beginning of Episode 2, players will investigate a transmission from a fellow Agent scouting the Pentagon for the perfusion bioreactor. Securing the bioreactor would allow Agents to replicate the antiviral samples recovered at Tidal Basin. Agents must navigate flood damage and Black Tusk forces to take back The Last Castle. After securing their safe house, players will be able to access the two replayable main missions of Episode 2
  • First Main Mission – Pentagon: Agents will discover the location of the perfusion bioreactor inside the Pentagon’s underground research facility. The Black Tusk have already infiltrated the lab and are attempting to extract the reactor.
  • Second Main Mission – DARPA Research Labs: Players must make their way through the Pentagon and into the DARPA Labs, as the Black Tusk are in the process of transporting the perfusion bioreactor through an abandoned Cold War tunnel network.
New “Technician” Specialization: Effective October 15, Year 1 pass holders and UPLAY+ subscribers will instantly unlock the Technician Specialization. Players who do not own the Year 1 pass can unlock the specialization by completing a series of objectives. Additional rewards, including a signature weapon skin, are also available once the specialization is unlocked. The latest specialization includes:
  • Signature Weapon: P-017 Launcher – a multi-missile launcher. Agents can lock-on and hit up to six enemies (depending on available ammo). With a simple push of a button, six missiles are unleashed to seek out their targets.
  • Sidearm: Maxim 9
  • Skill Variant: Artificer Hive
  • Grenade Mod: EMP Grenade
Classified Assignments (Exclusive only to Year 1 Pass holders and UPLAY+ subscribers): Agents can take on two new Classified Assignments at a Boathouse and Embassy.
  • Marina: Outcasts have been moving weapons and supplies into a boathouse on the Potomac River, which was used as a transport depot during the outbreak to move assets to the Potomac Center and Roosevelt Island. Agents must investigate and seize all the weapons they can find.
  • Embassy: A Joint Task Force helicopter filled with supplies was shot down by the Outcasts and crashed through the roof of the Mexican Embassy in Washington D.C. Agents will be tasked to locate the helicopter rescue the pilot and secure the supplies before the Outcasts get there.
The latest title update also brings an unprecedented number of fixes and improvements, as well as a brand new PvP mode.

Major Fixes and Improvements
Players will see significant game improvements in The Division 2 effective October 15. These improvements were developed thanks to community feedback on game forums and following last month’s Elite Task Force workshop, during which community members visited Ubisoft Massive studio in Malmö, Sweden to share thoughts and ideas about the game. Fixes and improvements include:

  • Targeted Loot
  • Named Items overhauled
  • Crafting Changes
  • Recalibration Changes
  • Filled Brands
  • Inventory Management 2.0
  • Increased stash space
  • Rebalance of talents and weapons
  • Dark Zone Server Transfers
  • Updated Thieves’ Den Vendor
  • Dark Zone Supply Drops Changes
  • Occupied Dark Zone Ambushes
  • Normalization in Dark Zone changes
  • Conflict: Loadout Selection during map voting
  • Bonus armor visualization increased
  • Conflict: End of Match Rewards changes
  • Stored tutorials
As part of Ubisoft’s commitment to the overall fixes and improvements to the game, The Division 2’s second raid will be delayed. The additional time allows the development team to focus on the overall quality of The Division 2, while developing a raid that will better meet the standards of its players.

New Conflict PvP Mode
The new Team Elimination PvP mode pits two teams of four into a best-of-seven round battle in D.C. Rounds will end once an entire team has been eliminated or time has expired. Team Elimination provides a teamwork focused tactical experience for players. Team Elimination takes effect on October 15.
New map: The “Wharf”
The new map ‘Wharf’ is on par with previous PvP maps in terms of size and takes players to an abandoned fishing harbor. It offers tactical gameplay opportunities, through flanking routes and raised positions.

Led by Massive Entertainment in collaboration with seven other studios around the world**, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is the next evolution in the open-world online shooter RPG genre that the first game helped establish. Set seven months after a deadly virus was released in New York City, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 brings players into a fractured and collapsing Washington D.C. The world is on the brink, its people living through the biggest crisis ever faced in human history. As veteran Division agents, players are the last hope against the complete fall of society as enemy factions vie for control of the city. If Washington D.C. is lost, the entire nation falls. Building upon more than two years of listening to and learnings from The Division community, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 will offer a substantial campaign that organically flows into a robust endgame, to create a cohesive and meaningful experience for all types of players, helping players emphasize their freedom to make strategic choices and hone their own approach.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is available on the Xbox One family of devices including the Xbox One X, PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Windows PC, UPLAY+, Ubisoft’s subscription service. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 will also launch on the new generation gaming platform, Stadia.
