New 'Darksiders Genesis' Trailer Spotlights Strife

Darksiders Genesis is winding its way to the first half of its split launch, with PC and Google Stadia versions releasing December 5th, 2019, and they’ve just released a new trailer to spotlight new character Strife.
The trailer, split between cinematic and gameplay, showcases a very different playstyle than the one sported by Strife’s brother, War. The ranged-heavy offensive output will allow players who prefer that style to stick mostly to Strife during the game, which allows gamers to switch between the two at will and supports two-player co-op – both local and online.
Here’s the press release:

Darksiders Genesis: Introducing Strife – Rider of the White Horse

Vienna, Austria and Austin, Texas, November 27th, 2019 – May we introduce you to Strife?
One… Two Three.
Strife, the Rider of the White Horse, is both impulsive and witty, true to the motto “Shoot first, ask questions later” or “Two Guns, one Horseman”.
He is the one who has blood on his boots on a pretty much constant basis. He fought countless enemies with his two best friends, Mercy and Redemption and the protection of his impenetrable armor. Always by his side is Mayhem, Strife’s phantom steed.
In Darksiders Genesis you can choose to play either War or his brother Strife, and head into combat side by side in two player cooperative mode (couch co-op trash talk, but also online). The story takes place before the events of the original game when Lucifer, the enigmatic and deceptive demon king, plots to upset the Balance by granting power to master demons throughout Hell.
Darksiders Genesis will release on PC and Google Stadia on December 5th 2019, and PlayStation®4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch will follow on February 14th 2020. Pre-order here: https://darksiders.com/order-here/

Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition Out Now on Nintendo Switch

I’ve played Darksiders II twice now: the original release, and the ‘Deathinitive Edition’ release on Xbox One. I’m still mulling over if I have time to add a third playthrough, this time on the Switch, amongst all the other releases I need to get through…
Check out the trailer, and if you have more free time than me, absolutely jump on this one. You won’t regret it.
Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition is already available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and out now on Nintendo Switch for an $29.99 Canadian.

Darksiders Genesis: 'Introducing War' Trailer Released

Darksiders Genesis looks incredibly promising, taking the Darksiders action-adventure gameplay and flipping it into a 3/4 top down perspective with tons of enemies to dispatch, bosses to destroy, and loot to….wait that sounds a lot like Diablo, doesn’t it?
Regardless of the influences, Darksiders Genesis looks like it’ll be a blast and part of that is getting more backstory on War, the Horseman of the Apocalypse who started the series by getting framed in the original Darksiders. With Genesis set prior to the original game, players will play as both War and his brother Strife – who favors more of a ranged approach to combat.
Check out the press release below:

Darksiders Genesis: Introducing War – Rider of the Red Horse

Vienna, Austria and Austin, Texas, September 4th, 2019 – May we introduce you to War?
War, the Rider of the Red Horse, is both honorable and savage. The youngest of the Four Horseman, but his age is no indication of his experience on the battleground. He has battled countless enemies with his furious weapon Chaoseater and the protection of his impervious armor. Always by his side is Ruin, War’s phantom steed. Ruin is both mighty and graceful with its blackened coat and fiery hooves and mane. War was wrongly framed by Abaddon for starting the Apocalypse too soon and was imprisoned for over one hundred years by The Charred Council. Well, at least he has beautiful long and white hair. Without split ends.
In Darksiders Genesis you can choose to play either War or his brother Strife, and head into combat side by side in two player cooperative mode. The story takes place before the events of the original game when Lucifer, the enigmatic and deceptive demon king, plots to upset the Balance by granting power to master demons throughout Hell. If you are a melee type of gamer, War is your (gauntlet) left-hand.
Darksiders Genesis will release on PC, PlayStation®4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia later this year. Pre-order here: https://darksiders.com/order-here/

THQ Nordic acquires Gunfire Games, Goodbye Kansas Game Invest, and Milestone s.r.l.

Timed with the publisher’s Q1 presentation, THQ Nordic closed out the acquisitions for two studios (Gunfire Games and Milestone s.r.l.) and an investment group (Goodbye Kansas Game Invest) involved in video games.
Gunfire Games have worked with THQ Nordic for some time on the Darksiders franchise, and their acquisition gives the publisher a strong presence in the action-RPG market. Milestone s.r.l. is a lesser-known developer active in the racing scene and perhaps best known for MotoGP and RIDE.
Goodbye Kansas Game Invest is an investment company focused on the Nordic games industry, and provides THQ Nordic a minority stake in five development studios: Palindrome Interactive, Fall Damage, Neon Giant, Kavalri, and Framebunker. Perhaps the bigger prize was the royalty rights to THQ Nordic’s upcoming action-RPG game, Biomutant.

Closer Look – Darksiders: The Forbidden Lands

When THQ Nordic announced the very pricey Darksiders Genesis Nephilim Edition people had some questions about what exactly Darksiders: The Forbidden Lands was. A new boardgame, based on Darksiders? How would it work? What did it look like?
Those questions get answered today, with a closer look at the contents of The Forbidden Lands and some details on how to play. Four players each choose their Horseman and then take to the board, exploring an all-new storyline through 19 missions in the Darksiders universe and building their character’s skills using their customizable deck of cards.
If you have a fifth friend who wants to play, they can step in as the game master and control the monsters and wait one second, they’re just trying to trick you into playing a Darksiders version of Dungeons & Dragons!
That sounds awesome actually…
Here’s the press release:

THQ Nordic announces the official board game Darksiders: The Forbidden Land, only available with Darksiders Genesis Nephilim Edition!

Premiere in the Darksiders history: Play all Four Horsemen at the same time!

Vienna, Austria and Austin, Texas, August 1st, 2019 – For the first time in history, all Four Horsemen of the Darksiders video games are playable at the same time! You and up to four of your friends can now play Darksiders together. Darksiders: The Forbidden Land is a co-operative dungeon crawler board game for 1-5 players. Take on the role of your favourite Horseman and battle alongside your fellow Riders through an entirely new storyline set in the Darksiders universe. Fight your way through to the hordes of monsters to defeat The Jailer and vanquish evil forever!
Game Details
With asymmetric player abilities, you can play as War, Death, Fury or Strife and experience the game completely differently each time. Beside 61 phenomenally detailed and pre-painted minis, the game includes customisable decks of cards for each Rider. That means that even multiple games with the same rider will be different. Manage your cards well, as you will be using them to move, attack enemies and upgrade your rider using Darksiders: The Forbidden Land’s unique new card economy mechanic. But don’t blow through them too quickly though, because once your deck runs out you’ve lost the battle.

The included Campaign Book has a thrilling story spread over 19 different levels – grouped into multiple scenarios – to play through. These can be tackled in sequence for an entire campaign play-through, players may choose to focus on a single scenario for a shorter gaming session, or even just play through a single level. With a variety of enemies as well as numerous modular hex-tile game boards included in the game, we also look forward to seeing fan-created custom levels and scenarios!
But wait…
We mentioned this game is playable with up to five people, but there are only Four Horsemen. How does that work? One of you can play as the game master, that’s how! Without the game master, there are rules determining how the enemies of the Four Horsemen will behave, but with a game master controlling the monsters an extra level of challenge is added as suddenly they can move tactically.
Board game Darksiders: The Forbidden Land contents
  • 61 pre-painted (!) Miniatures – including War, Death, Fury, Strife and the massive End-Boss the Jailer as high quality pre-painted miniatures
  • 124 Tokens
  • 36 Multi-Hex-Space Modular Boards
  • 423 Cards
  • 4 Player Boards
  • Custom Dice
  • Rulebook
  • Campaign Book

Darksiders: The Forbidden Land will only be available through the Darksiders Genesis Nephilim Edition! Pre-order here: https://darksiders.com/order-here/

About the board game Darksiders: The Forbidden Land
The Charred Council – the mediator between Heaven and Hell – is mystified: The barrier to the Forbidden Land, a world that has been isolated from the rest of creation for aeons, was broken! The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are ordered to investigate the reason, accompanied by an observing Watcher. When it becomes clear that the Forbidden Land hides more secrets than The Charred Council was willing to tell, the search for relics of an ancient civilization and a deadly demon begins…

Darksiders Genesis Gets Pricey – But Very Limited – Nephilim Edition

The hype machine for the upcoming Darksiders Genesis is starting to spool up after the shocking reveal at E3 that it will be a top-down 3/4 perspective action-adventure game that looks a lot like Darksiders and Diablo had a baby.
Despite the change in perspective, it looks like Darksiders Genesis will retain much of the platforming flavour that made past games so much fun, with wall jumps, bomb pods, gliding, and other mechanics already visible in the trailers and gameplay demos. Check out a 24-odd minute gameplay demo of the title here.
It’s not uncommon for games to get special editions, but Darksiders has always taken this to the next level with some truly SPECIAL items included, and Genesis is no different. Buyers of the top-tier Nephilim Edition will get not only the game, a soundtrack, a steelbook and artbook, a statue…but also a board game based on the franchise called Darksiders: The Forbidden Land.
Though it totes a hefty $379 (not clarified just yet whether that’s USD or CAD) price tag, this truly IS a limited edition, with only 5,000 being made.

Darksiders III: Keeper of the Void DLC now available

Darksiders III introduced gamers to Fury, one of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse, in a whip-wielding action-adventure game that tucked itself into the plot of past games. The developers at Gunfire Games first expanded the game with The Crucible DLC, a wave-based arena survival mode, and now players can dive back into the Darksiders action with a second DLC – The Keeper of the Void.
This DLC sends Fury into the Serpent Holes to clear out an ancient threat at the behest of Vulgrim – so you just KNOW it’s not going to be as easy as he tries to make it seem. With new environments comes new puzzles, enemies, and – of course – bigger and better weapons. The Serpent Holes even promise the ultimate prize – The Abyssal Armor.
The Keeper of the Void DLC is available now at a $12.99 price point.

Review – Darksiders: Warmastered Edition (Switch)

I first jumped into the Darksiders universe way back in 2010 – mostly because of Joe Madureira’s connection to the project as I was a huge fan of his art style – and fell in love with the game almost immediately. The action bits, the light puzzle/platform elements, the delightfully weird cast of characters – I was hooked.

That’s probably why I’ve now reviewed the game three times, including this one. First on the Xbox 360 when it launched, then on Xbox One when the Warmastered Edition (THQ Nordic’s spin on remastered edition naming) launched, and now on the Switch – and thanks to being portable it might be my favourite version yet.

As War, gamers harness an ever-growing arsenal of weapons and abilities that allow them to access new areas and take on new enemies. Darksiders doesn’t demand long hours of play from you, however, allowing gamers to jump in, kill some enemies or destroy some environmental objects and gather some souls, then pop back out if they need to. That lends itself incredibly well to Switch’s portable mode, so you can play a bit on the couch while commercials are on in the show you’re watching, or, if you’ve got more time, kick back and drop into the world for an hour or two to finish some quest lines. That freedom to play as much or little as you like, whenever and wherever you want, really works with Darksiders.

That’s not to say this is the best version, as some corners were cut to get it on the Switch – particularly noticeable if you’re playing it in handheld mode which sees resolution and detail take a hit – and the Switch’s stubby analog sticks felt less precise than I’d have liked at times, which interfered with camera control and keeping my combo chains going.

All that said, this is still a totally enjoyable romp through an over the top story with gameplay that feels like Legend of Zelda and God of War got mashed together. It’s a well-built progression system that arguably peaked in the franchise’s second outing, and I kind of hope we see that ported over to the Switch next.

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition and Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition getting Xbox One X enhancements

Great news for Xbox One X owners who want an excuse to play through these games again before the third one releases. THQ Nordic announced today that it’s enhancing Darksiders: Warmastered Edition and Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition on Xbox One X!
From THQ Nordic:

“Players who pre-order Darksiders III Blades & Whips Edition from the Microsoft Store will be able to download and play the enhanced Darksiders: Warmastered Edition and Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition in 4K, along with Darksiders III on November 27!
The comprehensive Darksiders III pre-order campaign is ongoing and promises major rewards for Darksiders fans who have patiently waited more than six years for the release of Darksiders III.”
