‘Phoenix Point: Year One Edition’ Now Available

Phoenix Point piqued my interest from the moment it was announced, and the game delivered on that hype enough that I’m also interested in Phoenix Point: Year One Edition – which hit retail today.

The turn-based strategy game from X-COM creator Julian Gollop is familiar to fans of his previous work, but brings in new ideas and innovations that would have been hard to accommodate in X-COM. That’s the problem with working on an established franchise – even if it’s one that you yourself established – and the joy with breaking off to create something new.

The Year One Edition provides a new tutorial prologue to help ease new players into the game, new weapons and equipment, a new help system, and overhauls to menus and gameplay. It also includes all previously-released DLC for the game – and it’s 50% off for a limited time!

Phoenix Point: Year One Edition is available now on Steam, GOG.com, and the Epic Games Store.

Here’s the press release:

Phoenix Point: Year One Edition Out Now on Steam, GOG.com & the Epic Games Store

Snapshot’s hit turn-based strategy game arrives on Steam for the first time with a new major content update and special low price!

SOFIA, Bulgaria  Dec. 3, 2020 — Snapshot Games has debuted Phoenix Point: Year One Edition on Steam and GOG.com. This definitive version of the hit turn-based strategy game from X-COM creator Julian Gollop features all previously released DLC (including “Legacy of the Ancients,” “Blood and  Titanium,” and the “Living Weapons Pack”) and is available for 50% off for a limited time on Steam and GOG.com, as well as the Epic Games Store.

Phoenix Point: Year One Edition’s launch today coincides with the game’s massive new Polaris update, which adds new content and features driven by community feedback, including:

  • A brand-new tutorial prologue that introduces new characters, cinematics, and maps while teaching the core gameplay fundamentals.
  • New weapons and equipment with their own research tracts, including a riot shield, shotgun, grenade launcher and heavy cannon.
  • A new contextual pop-up help system integrated throughout the entire game.
  • New menu screens with updated info, plus a wide range of gameplay improvements, balance updates and more.

Phoenix Point delivers a new breed of turn-based strategy and action against alien invaders. Build global alliances, manage your base, and command your forces in intense battles with dynamic objectives and destructible environments. Procedurally generated maps, branching storylines with multiple endings, and enemies that mutate to counter your tactics ensure no two playthroughs are ever the same. That experience has grown even further post-launch with new DLC and updates featuring bonus story missions, cinematics, maps, weapons, abilities, factions and more, all included in the Year One Edition!

Current owners of Phoenix Point on the Epic Games Store can upgrade to the new Year One Edition to get the “Legacy of the Ancients,” “Blood and  Titanium,” and “Living Weapons Pack” DLC together for 50% off the standard price of $14.99 for a limited time.

Airship Syndicate Developing ‘Ruined King’ – A Turn-Based RPG Set In ‘League of Legends’ Universe

I like League of Legends (LoL) even though I’m not great at it and don’t have the time to dedicate to get there, so I’m delighted to get word that Airship Syndicate – a developer whose work I’ve loved in the past – is developing a single-player turn-based RPG set in that universe.

That game, slated to hit console and PC in early 2021 at this point, is called Ruined King: A League of Legends Story. It will debut on Steam/Epic Game Store, Switch, PS4, and Xbox One, with the next-gen release planned for “soon thereafter” according to the press release, which you can read in its entirety below.

Players can expect to explore two regions: Bilgewater and Shadow Isles, while learning more backstory details about existing LoL champions Miss Fortune, Illaoi, Braum, Yasuo, Ahri, and Pyke.

Here’s the press release:

RISE AGAINST RUIN ON CONSOLE AND PC, EARLY 2021

Ruined King: A League of Legends Story launches on Console and PC early 2021

Los Angeles, CA – October 31, 2020 – Today Riot Forge announced that Ruined King: A League of Legends Story will launch on consoles and PC in Early 2021. Bringing the League of Legends IP to consoles for the first time, Ruined King will be available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation®4 system,  Xbox One, Steam®, and The Epic Games Store and soon thereafter on PlayStation®5 system and Xbox Series X|S with existing PlayStation®4 system and Xbox One owners having the ability to upgrade their version for free.

Ruined King is a great way to expand the world of Runeterra for brand new players as well as our dedicated League of Legends (LoL) fans,” said Head of Riot Forge at Riot Games, Leanne Loombe. “Ruined King will be the first single-player game to bring the LoL universe to both consoles and PC. We are excited to take this plunge into exploring stories and champions that players have enjoyed over the years, and can’t wait for our players to embark on this new adventure with us.”

Ruined King: A League of Legends Story is developed by Airship Syndicate (the creators of Battle Chasers: Nightwar and Darksiders Genesis, led by the legendary comic book artist Joe Madureira) and is the first game published by Riot Forge. This single-player and immersive turn-based RPG invites new players to the LoL universe as well as players entrenched in the lore to enjoy exploring its mysteries.

The story is set in two regions of Runeterra, Bilgewater, a port town that is home to sea monster hunters, dock gangs, and smugglers from across the known world; and the Shadow Isles, a land cursed with the deadly Black Mist which shrouds the island and corrupts those it comes in contact with. In order to defeat a common and mysterious enemy, players will form an unlikely party of beloved League of Legends champions – Miss Fortune, Illaoi, Braum, Yasuo, Ahri, and Pyke.

“We couldn’t resist the chance to work with Riot Forge to expand the epic world of Runeterra,” said Joe Madureira, CEO of Airship Syndicate. “These are some of our own favorite champions, and we can’t wait for players to see how we brought the characters, creatures, and environments of Runeterra to life.”

Riot Forge will have more to share about Ruined King: A League of Legends Story in December. For the latest, visit https://ruinedking.com/

Review – Mortal Shell

I have a lot of questions about how Cold Symmetry was founded three years ago by a team of four and has already – during a world-wide pandemic – somehow cranked out Mortal Shell, one of my favourite games in the ever-growing ‘Soulslike’ genre.

At the game’s outset players are introduced to the Foundling, a pale nightmarish figure that reminds me of the Engineer from the movie ‘Prometheus’ but with even less of a tan if that’s possible. In the first dozen or so minutes players will get every scrap of the game’s ‘how this works’ handholding and then get dumped into a boss fight with only light and heavy attacks to carry the offensive workload, a dodge and dodge roll to handle the bulk of the defensive chores, and Harden – the ability to freeze in place and harden your skin to ward off a single blow, a key tool for when you’re facing imminent death.

By itself, the Harden ability would be enough for Cold Symmetry’s debut title to show they have some ideas of their own to inject into the genre but wait – there’s more! As you explore the world, you’ll encounter Shells – the fallen remains of four heroes that you can inhabit and animate, each possessing unique abilities to unlock.

Harros the Vassal is the first you’ll run into as part of the tutorial. This is the solidly ‘average’ shell, with good durability (health), stamina (used for attacking and dodging), and resolve (which powers your weapon abilities) – but not excelling in any area. A good starter Shell, Harros has abilities that center around the Harden ability to reduce or reset its cooldown, and to make it last longer.

Tiel the Acolyte sports low durability and resolve, but sky-high stamina makes this a great Shell for those who want to use hit and run tactics or just spam attacks like mad. Tiel also picks up some amazing abilities centered around poison, which helps offset the low health and resolve.

Solomon the Scholar has so-so stamina, but high durability and off-the-charts resolve help make up for that. Solomon’s abilities focus largely on refilling his already ridiculous resolve pool, making this Shell perfect for those who want to use weapon abilities over and over in a battle.

Eredrim the Venerable has maxed out durability thanks to a massive suit of armour but pays for that battleship-like defensive strength with low stamina and resolve. With abilities that center around doing increased damage to enemies, Eredrim can be a fearsome machine in combat but it’s not the easiest Shell to master.

Mortal Shell is a breath of fetid swamp air into the Soulslike genre, but that’s more of a positive than it sounds…

Roaming the world of Mortal Shell it’s easy to see how those four adventurers came to meet their fate, with a non-stop barrage of enemies waiting to ambush you from behind a tree or corner, or to materialize in front of you with little in the way of warning. Fortunately, after a bit of exploration you’ll learn how to parry attacks and, if you have a bar of resolve stored up, can then fire off a riposte that heals you while doing enough damage to kill most enemies. Between the parry/riposte and Harden mechanics, I found I didn’t miss having a block button at all. The parry system is on a tight timing window and several enemy attacks have odd windups that seem designed to draw out and waste an early parry, but when it works it’s incredibly satisfying.

Should all your defensive tricks fail you and your Shell’s health drop to zero for the first time, the Foundling is ejected in an explosion that momentarily Hardens enemies around you, freezing them solid. That provides just enough of a grace period for you to regain your feet, at which point it’s vital to quickly re-inhabit the abandoned Shell, as a single hit will kill the Foundling. Regain the Shell and you’ll have full health and stamina, but be more careful as being reduced to zero again means death.

Surviving in Fallgrim is a long way from thriving however, so you’ll need to gather Tar and Glimpses to unlock the abilities your Shell can bring to the battlefield. Both can be gathered from fallen enemies or from the environment, but the balance – at least in my experience – was a little out of whack at the start with not enough Glimpses dropping to allow me to spend my abundance of Tar. Gather up enough and seek out Sester Genessa, a mysterious figure who appears virtually everywhere you go and can grant you deeper access to your Shells.

Other vendors are willing to take your Tar in exchange for consumables, but it felt like I would be wasting a precious resource to use it that way. Enemy mobs will drop bits of rat and rotten food for you to eat to heal up and healing mushrooms spawn in the environment, making it hard to justify spending Tar outside of my Shell improvement plan.

What I Loved:

  • Great combat that kept expanding in strategy as I played
  • Stellar progression system
  • I felt wholeheartedly rooted in this creepy world, great atmosphere
  • Harden might be my new favourite skill
  • Wait, no – it’s the Parry/Riposte instakill and heal
  • Oh no, I know – it’s using the Lute to lure enemies away from their camp
  • Some great boss fights

What I Liked:

  • Some so-so boss fights, including that last one…
  • Good assortment of enemies, but could have had more variety
  • Every Shell has a unique set of abilities and suits a different playstyle
  • World layout was easy to pick up and navigate
  • Item ‘familiarity’ unlocks knowledge of items by using them
  • New Game + mode

What I Disliked:

  • Some cheap hits, like being attacked at the end of a cutscene
  • I’d kill for a ranged class
  • Some technical issues, but nothing major
  • Going to be super short if you’re super skilled (I’m not)

What I Hated:

  • Nothing

The Final Word:
An incredibly impressive first effort from Cold Symmetry and leaves me wondering what they’ll turn out next. One of my favourite games this year.

Mortal Shell is available now on PC (via the Epic Games Store), PS4, and Xbox One. Reviewed on Xbox One X using review code provided by the publisher.

YAGER’s ‘The Cycle’ Season 3 Now Available

I have to admit that I have The Cycle installed, have since the very first season, but I still haven’t found the time to get into it. I think part of that is that it looks right up my alley and I’m afraid it’ll suck up all the free time I have left, but from the looks of the third season I might have to bite the bullet and give it a shot at long last.

Season Three brings in a couple additions in trains and a new space station, but also has a boatload of player-centric improvements like revamped social features, a new crafting system, skill-based matchmaking, and esports support.

That skill-based matchmaking might make it just too tempting to fire it up, but we’ll see what the weekend brings.

Here’s the press release:

All Aboard! The Cycle Season 3 Adds Moving Trains and a New Space Station

YAGER’s competitive quest shooter gets even better with revamped social, crafting and competitive features

BERLIN  July 8, 2020 – The third season of YAGER’s competitive quest shooter The Cycle is here! Season 3 introduces a big showstopper: Prospect Station, a new social hub for all players. In this bustling space station orbiting Fortuna III, you’re free to interact with other players, grab new missions, craft items for your next match and more. Spend less time in menus in your new home away from home!

Season 3 also raises the stakes with a new setpiece contract on a moving Mag Train available on both maps. As the train loops around the environment, squads must battle to get on board and keep it locked down, forcing players to use whatever cover they can find in close-quarters combat without falling off!

There’s a ton of other new content added with Season 3 today, as well, including:

  • A total revamp of the crafting system, scrapping the old artificial resource system and streamlining it with a single soft currency for all items and mods, making it easier to manage your resources and craft what you want when you want it.
  • New starter shotgun and assault rifle, designed to help newcomers flesh out their arsenal.
  • New features for The Cycle’s competitive scene, including support for esports tournaments and the introduction of skill-based matchmaking.
  • Two new playable Prospectors: Primetime, a streamer with a flashy LCD outfit, and Ronin, a sci-fi samurai.
  • Recall Recharge: A new mechanic which allows you to recharge your recall battery, essentially letting you gain a life back if you lose it.
  • A new context-sensitive ping system for contracts, making it easier to communicate and coordinate with your squad.

Season 3 also introduces new free and premium (Gold) versions of the Fortuna Pass, The Cycle’s exclusive season pass, each offering a variety of in-game currency and rewards like weapons, skins, emotes, banners, sprays and more. This season’s free pass features over 50 unlockable rewards. The Gold pass features more than 150 rewards (including those from the free pass), as well as the two new Prospectors and special challenges and customization elements for them both.

In addition, players can claim the new “Rogue Starter Pack” for free on The Cycle’s Epic Games Store page from now until July 22. This limited-time bundle of exclusive in-game items not available anywhere else includes the new Rogue Thrill Seeker Prospector, plus a unique vehicle, melee weapon and weapon skin (total value 40 USD/35 EUR).

The Cycle is an action-packed competitive quest shooter: complete jobs, defeat hostile lifeforms, gear up with new weapons and powers, out-score other prospectors, and make it off the planet alive before it kills you. The Cycle delivers a competitive multiplayer experience where everyone can survive, but how you stake your claim can make all the difference. Form squads with friends, make uneasy alliances with strangers, or go it alone — the choice is yours!

Season 3 of The Cycle is free to play now on PC via the Epic Games Store. For more information, visit www.TheCycle.game.

Think what you will of Epic’s foray into the world of PC games commerce with the Epic Games Store – and people definitely HAVE thought and shared a lot of things about the idea – there’s no denying the flood of free games has been pretty lucrative for gamers who don’t mind installing a new launcher.

Mortal Shell Arrives This Fall on Epic Games Store, PS4, and Xbox One

Mortal Shell is an action-RPG from indie dev studio Cold Symmetry that I’ve heard compared to Dark Souls or Bloodborne a ton, but to me the moment to moment gameplay and world seems closer to the originator – Demon’s Souls, a game I imported from some small Asian country along with photography game Afrika so I could play them.

It’s not going to be until we get to go hands on with the game that we know which comparisons are the most apt, but that shouldn’t be long with a PC beta slated to run for a week starting on July 3rd.

Mortal Shell will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store (price at $29.99 / €29.99 / £24.99) for a year before hitting Steam, so if you don’t have an Epic Games Store account, now’s the time to get one – and really, with all the games they’ve given away for free there’s no excuse to not have one at this point. The game will also be hitting PS4 and Xbox One when it releases this fall.

The developers also released a new trailer, this time featuring Tiel, one of the game’s four playable shells. This shell seems to follow the classic rogue template, with high agility and the use of poisons to incapacitate foes.

Here’s the press release:

MORTAL SHELL announced as Epic Games Store timed PC-exclusive, as indie studio Cold Symmetry showcases another exhilarating trailer

Showstopping week capped off with huge game reveals on IGN, the PC Gaming Show, and Fextralife

Monday June 15, 2020, London. Mortal Shell, the highly-anticipated action-RPG created by a small indie-team of development veterans, capped off a week of gameplay reveals and key announcements with a huge double-bill across Saturday and Sunday, showcasing even more never-before-seen gameplay at the PCGaming Show and on a special livestream from the soulslike aficionados at Fextralife.

On Saturday at the PCGaming Show, it was announced that Mortal Shell would ship on the Epic Games Store this year as a timed PC-exclusive at $29.99 / €29.99 / £24.99, along with simultaneous console releases on PS4 and Xbox One. Pre-orders for the PC version are live now on the Epic Games Store. The game is also scheduled to ship on Steam in Q3 2021.

“The primary goals of our studio are to make Mortal Shell the best game it can be and to live another day and keep making awesome games in the future,” said the founders of Cold Symmetry in a joint statement. “Epic’s financial support, for a small studio like ours, was clearly going to help us achieve those goals so it was something we had to consider earnestly.”

Along with Mortal Shell’s platform and price announcements, the PCGaming Show also released an all-new gameplay trailer centered around one of the game’s four playable shells, Tiel, an envenomed and complex character whose innate agility and familiarity with poison makes him a highly dangerous individual.

Another huge highlight from the event was all-new Mortal Shell gameplay, which this time showcased the player facing off against Hadern, an elusive adversary whose motivations are unclear. At this early section in the game, the player has yet to possess a Shell with nothing to rely on aside from their instincts and skill with a sword. Here the game strips players to the basics with a pure test of swordplay: Movement, timing, anticipation, distance, and committing your blade. The battleground is abstract, open, laced in mist and free from distraction. There are no excuses.

Wrapping up a busy and content-filled week, on Sunday a finale of unique gameplay aired on the Fextralife Twitch channel to its huge community of battle-scarred soulslike aficionados. This video centered around Tiel and a never-before-seen weapon, the Martyr’s Blade.

This flurry of new content followed the game’s world-premiere on Wednesday, June 10 at the IGN Summer of Gaming event, where it was revealed that Mortal Shell’s Closed Beta would commence from July 3 and span one week (visit the Discord Server for details and to register).

Mortal Shell provides an uncompromising soulslike experience through a compact, single-player game. A first playthrough would likely last between 15 and 20 hours, although the game offers additional secrets and content to support and enrich multiple playthroughs.

Painstakingly designed by a prized coalition of veteran developers who are credited with working on some of the biggest AAA titles on the market, Mortal Shell is an uncompromising, authentic, and hauntingly beautiful action-RPG built upon the ruthless traditions of the soulslike genre.

Join the Mortal Shell Discord community here. Follow Mortal Shell on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram.

Mortal Shell is scheduled for a Q3 release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, published by Playstack. Visit www.MortalShell.com for more details.

2K Announces Mafia: Trilogy

I think 2K’s Mafia series is one of the more under-appreciated series out there, but that might change with the announcement of Mafia: Trilogy, a remaking/remastering of the franchise’s three games. Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition are both available now with substantial upgrades, but it’s the ground-up remake of the original Mafia – slated for an August release – that really has my interest piqued.

The remake of the original is just that – a ground-up remake that sports an updated script, new cutscenes, and the somewhat nebulous “additional gameplay sequences and features” addition I’d love to hear more about. In the preview screenshots the visual upgrade is stunning, and I’m interested in seeing if the story polish is up to that level as well.

Here’s the press release:

An Offer You Can’t Refuse: 2K Announces Mafia: Trilogy

Live the life of a gangster across three distinct eras of organized crime in America with Definitive Editions of all three Mafia games from 2K and Hangar 13

Mafia II remaster and re-introduction to Mafia III now available, built-from-the-ground-up remake of the original Mafia to launch on August 28

Combined, the critically acclaimed Mafia crime dramas have sold-in more than 18 million units worldwide. Now, for the first time on modern consoles, experience all three entries of the revered action-adventure series together in one definitive organized crime saga. Mafia: Trilogy includes:

Mafia: Definitive Edition – The built-from-the-ground-up remake of the beloved classic;
Mafia II: Definitive Edition – The ultra HD remaster of the fan favorite;

Players who purchase Mafia: Trilogy digitally prior to August 28 will be able to access Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition immediately on PlayStation® 4, Xbox One, and Steam, and will be able to download Mafia: Definitive Edition as soon as it becomes available on August 28. Mafia: Definitive Edition – the centerpiece of the collection – launches August 28 as a comprehensive, rebuilt-from-the-ground-up remake of the original Mafia, complete with an updated script filled with rich new dialogue, expanded backstories, and additional cutscenes; all-new gameplay sequences and features; the same stellar game engine that powered Mafia III’s best-in-class cinematics; and other enhancements. It’s the Mafia players remember, only much more.

“The original Mafia made such a lasting impact on how video games can tell serious stories, and we know how much the series’ fans still revere it,” said Haden Blackman, President and CCO at Hangar 13, who led the development of Mafia: Definitive Edition across the studio’s offices in Brno and Prague, Czech Republic; Brighton, United Kingdom; and Novato, Calif. “Nearly 20 years after the Mafia series started, we now have an amazing opportunity to introduce this beloved game to a new generation of players and give longtime fans a chance to relive Tommy’s story with a stellar modern presentation, as well as new story elements and gameplay features.”

Players who pre-order Mafia: Definitive Edition – as well as players who purchase the digital version or pre-order the physical version of Mafia: Trilogy – prior to August 28 will receive “The Chicago Outfit” bonus add-on content for Mafia: Definitive Edition. This content pack includes:

Here’s the press release:

FREAK ACCIDENT PUZZLER ‘DEATH COMING’ FREE ON EPIC GAMES STORE STARTING MAY 7

Darkly charming puzzler from NExT Studios available for free just as the company’s next game, Crown Trick, continues closed beta

Thursday, April 30 – Death is coming, for free, to the Epic Games Store – and that’s a good thing! NExT Studios’ freak accident puzzle game Death Coming will be available for free from Thursday, May 7 to Thursday, May 14 on the Epic Games Store to any mortal soul seeking a bit more control over the lives (and deaths) of others. Death Coming’s free offer comes as the upcoming and beautifully animated roguelike RPG from NExT Studios, Crown Trick, continues its closed beta period until Wednesday, May 20, with signups available here.

Death Coming puts the Reaper’s powers in players’ hands as they experiment with ordinary objects that lead to extraordinary demises. Each level is a large non-linear puzzle within a variety of environments – including a suburban neighborhood and a secret military lab – brimming with unsuspecting people whose reactive AI alters their behaviors when something happens to, or nearby, them. It’s all wrapped in a devilishly morbid sense of humor, vibrant pixel art style and an ultimately touching reflection on humanity that just might make players rethink their actions by the game’s end.

NExT Studios is also giving away, for free, Steam key bundles containing five of the developer’s top games: UnheardBladed FuryIris.FallBiped and Death Coming. The “High 5 with NExT at Home” giveaway event begins Friday, May 1, with one game being given away each day until Tuesday, May 5. Players only need to stay updated on NExT Studio’s Twitter for details on how to enter.
