Photo Mode Coming to The Waylanders In Second Winter Update

The Waylanders started out Early Access in really good shape, but the team at Gato Salvaje Studio continues to follow their pre-release road map with the second of three planned winter updates.

This update will bring with it a photo mode, easily my favourite non-gameplay addition to any game. The mode looks slick, and I’m eager to get my hands on it.

Here’s the press release:

The Waylanders Adds Photo Mode and Expands Character Origins in Early Access Update

New Early Access update adds expanded character origin videos, new photo mode, bug fixes, and more improvements requested by the community.

A Coruña, Spain — Jan 11, 2020 – In the second of their three winter updates, Gato Salvaje Studio has added new origin story videos for each character option to their myth-filled RPG, The Waylanders. Each of the eight new origin videos expands on a character’s background and explores different facets of the world of The Waylanders.

“The Waylanders has been heavily influenced by many of the best RPGs we’ve played over the last few decades. Part of creating a character shouldn’t just be what they look like, but also where they’re from and how they tie into the story you’re about to jump into.” said Gato Salvaje Studio Creative Director, Serio Prieto. “Assuming your character hasn’t just sprung into existence, they should feel as if they’re part of the world. These new origins give our community deeper insight into not only the world we’re building, but also how history weaves together with myth in The Waylanders.”

The Immersion Update is the second of the three planned updates for The Waylanders this winter. Team as shown on the game’s Winter Roadmap. Coming updates planned for January will continue to implement community feedback, and add localization for the game in Spanish, Latin American Spanish, French, German, Simplified Chinese, Russian, and Galician.

Currently available in Steam Early Access and GOG Games in Development program, The Waylanders is set to release on both platforms in Spring 2021. More information about the game can be found on The Waylanders website.

Waylanders Roadmap Highlights Bi-Weekly Content Pushes

Gato Salvaje Studio surprised a lot of gamers with The Waylanders, an ambitious Early Access title on Steam that needs some work to polish it up, but is already worth your investment of both money and time.

They’re not resting on their laurels though, and they’ve released a roadmap – view the full res image here – that’s aggressive in its promises – a bi-weekly content update schedule that includes story additions, character additions, quests, features, and bug fixes aplenty.

I’ve enjoyed my time with the game so far, and I’ve barely scraped the surface of the class system that first attracted me to it. If the studio can stick to this development schedule, expect to hear a lot more about The Waylanders in the future.

Cinematic Trailer for The Waylanders Drops at Gamescom

I was on board with The Waylanders as soon as they announced they had five basic classes and 30 advanced classes. What can I say, I’m a sucker for finding/developing new classes in a roleplaying game (RPG).
The game isn’t slated to hit PC until 2020, but they’ve revealed a cinematic trailer at Gamescom that’s worth checking out, and dropped news of a couple of big additions to the team: Chris Avellone and Inon Zur.
If you’re an RPG fan, you’ll want to keep an eye on this one. Here’s the press release and some screenshots:

The Waylanders Reveal a Stunning Cinematic Trailer at Gamescom 2019

A new trailer and some incredible new additions to the team highlight a big Gamescom presence for The Waylanders

Cologne, Germany – August 23, 2019 — Fresh off their exclusive reveal on IGN Live at Gamescom 2019 and exactly one year after it was first announced, Gato Studio is sharing an absolutely stunning look into epic time-traveling RPG, The Waylanders with an all-new cinematic trailer. They’re also excited to announce that joining narrative lead Emily Grace Buck, whose hard work has shaped this already stellar storyline, The Waylanders also sees the addition of legendary scriptwriter, Chris Avellone, alongside Emmy Award-winning musician, Inon Zur (Dragon Age: Origins, Fallout 3, Crysis) who will be along for the ride as the lead musician on the project.

Chris Avellone brings with him an extensive resume and has been working on The Waylanders for the past 18 months. With past credits on games such as Fallout: New Vegas and Divinity: Original Sin 2, as well as upcoming credits on AAA projects like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Dying Light 2, Avellone adds to an already top-rated writing team which includes narrative lead Emily Grace Buck (Telltale’s The Walking Dead), consultant Mike Laidlaw (Dragon Age: Origins, Jade Empire), and game director Sergio Prieto. Together, this exemplary team is crafting a sweeping and fantastic RPG story.

Inon Zur, the lead musician for The Waylanders project, is also no stranger to the world of videogames. Known for his internationally acclaimed work on the Fallout saga and its unforgettable main theme, Zur has seen his name in the credits of many of gaming’s biggest heavy-hitters including Dragon Age: Origins, Soulcalibur V, Dragon’s Dogma, and more. He is an Emmy award-winner and three-time BAFTA nominee.

An exciting fantasy RPG inspired by classics such as Dragon Age: Origins and Baldur’s Gate, The Waylanders showcases a unique, party-based experience that time travels between two distinct eras — Celtic and Medieval — covering a rich history that has been largely overlooked in video game lore up to this point. Choices made in one time period can have dire consequences in the other, meaning players will feel the impact of their decisions in surprising and shocking ways.

Its innovative gameplay boasts unique formations for deep, tactical combat, in combination with 6 basic and 30 advanced classes, as well as 5 playable races (based on Celtic mythology) with full character customization and different origins for your character.

Companions are an integral part of any RPG experience, and The Waylanders offers a variety of traveling companions that can join you on your journey. The player will be able to talk to their companions in-depth, discover their past, play loyalty missions, and even experience romances with them.

The Waylanders will be coming to PC in 2020.
