Review – Marvel’s Avengers

Marvel’s Avengers was pegged as a Destiny-like loot game ahead of its release, a notion supported by all the pre-release marketing, but that sells the game criminally short.

Don’t get me wrong, there is that whole Games As A Service aspect to Avengers and when you hit the ‘endgame’ here, you’ll jump into the many missions available to you to grind out levels and loot to improve your character. Before that though, there’s a great campaign that deserved a lot more focus than their marketing gave it.

As Kamala Khan – Ms. Marvel if we’re using our made-up names, a character I was aware of but not familiar with going into the game, players will help pull the Avengers back together and you’ll play as Black Widow, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, and Iron Man during the game’s 15-ish hour story mode as she tracks them down and recruits them back into the team.

Khan, played perfectly by Sandra Saad, is a delight as she transforms from squealing fangirl who is awestruck by the Avengers into a hero in her own right. The transformation is handled better than other ‘ordinary person to hero’ evolutions, if only because there’s no ‘flip the switch’ moment where she goes from normal to perfection.

Khan doubts herself through most of the game. She makes mistakes, and she gains experience and understanding. She never totally loses her fangirl adoration of the Avengers roster, but it becomes tempered by understanding they’re regular people who make mistakes, disagree, and even fight. I won’t spoil the ups and downs of the plot, but for comic fans it’s worth playing and probably justifies the price of admission on its own.

Get done with the story, though – or jump in early if you don’t mind some late-game spoilers, and the rest of the game expands into the endgame form via the Avengers Initiative. Jump into any of the dozen-plus missions available – with more added regularly and changes made to the modifiers on existing missions to keep them fresh – and take on enemies to gather loot and accessories to increase your character’s power.

Playing with up to three friends or allowing the AI to fill those roles, gamers can choose to be Black Widow, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, or Ms. Marvel with the caveat that there can be only one of each hero in the game. The combat is quick and frantic, with a mix of melee and ranged combat that’s a ton of fun for both button mashers and combo artists. There’s a full selection of stuns, knockbacks, shield breakers, launchers, air juggles, and other beat-em-up staples that players can take advantage of but mashing on the buttons can work for the lower challenge levels.

Each character comes with a ‘battle pass’ to fill by completing daily and weekly challenges, unlocking new emotes, takedowns, outfits, and the game’s currency. All six of the starter characters receive their battle pass for free, allowing gamers to pile up currency in advance of the addition of new characters as downloadable content (DLC).

All DLC for the game will be free – new regions, new adventures, new enemies, and even new characters. The new characters will have a battle pass associated with them, costing 1,000 of the game’s currency to unlock. Completing the battle pass returns that 1,000 plus another 400 more, so there should be no need to spend money on future battle pass additions. The game also has skins to purchase, but I haven’t seen one that tempted me to spend any of the currency I’ve gathered – if they hope to finance future development with outfit sales, they need to do a better job on that front.

Marvel’s Avengers is a must-buy for comic fans, and has a real shot at being one of the most complete beat-em-ups released this year – even if nobody thought that’s what kind of game it was going to be. The endgame needs some fleshing out, but it’s more than enough to keep you busy until it’s been rounded into shape. The game is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. PS4 and Xbox One versions offer free upgrades to the next-gen, though it’s not yet known if game progress will carry over.

June’s War Table Stream For Marvel’s Avengers Dives Into Details

Marvel’s Avengers got off on the wrong foot with gamers thanks to some fairly low quality leaked footage, but it has managed to look better and better each time it’s shown – a bit of a rarity in game development.

That trend continued with the first War Table stream today, with new revelations on both co-op gameplay and hero customization…and I have to admit I really want to play this game even more now.

There were still some areas I have questions about – like what the UI during gameplay will look like, but it showed a bit of what could be legit gameplay, so maybe that’s already answered. The framerate didn’t seem great at times, but it’s a ways from launch yet so there’s certainly plenty of time to sort that out.

Here’s the press release:

NEW MARVEL’S AVENGERS WAR TABLE DIGITAL STREAM DELVES DEEP INTO THE GAME

Today, SQUARE ENIX® released the first Marvel’s Avengers War Table digital stream providing the most in-depth look yet at Marvel’s Avengers.

The Marvel’s Avengers War Table offers players a world premiere look at new trailers, including a first showing of new Thor gameplay in his, “Once an Avenger” campaign hero mission. This playthrough follows The God of Thunder as he battles enemies with powerful lightning strikes, unleashes a barrage of Mjolnir attacks, and performs many other signature heroic moves solo and with AI Avengers teammates.

The stream also offers more details on the game’s central villain, MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing), who Marvel fans will recognize as the artificially mutated, super intelligent overlord of AIM (Advanced Idea Mechanics).

Lastly, Crystal Dynamics revealed brand-new information about War Zones, the game’s team-based missions, including their structure and how the Avengers become even more powerful when working together. War Zones can be played either solo with AI hero companions, or in co-op groups of up to four players. The stream also revealed more of the game’s world, from AIM’s research facilities to a derelict Helicarrier, all of which can be explored by players to earn new rewards, gear, and experience points.

Marvel’s Avengers offers players a truly rich experience, with a combination of Hero Missions and War Zones. Hero Missions are single-player only and are part of the initial Campaign. They are designed to showcase each hero’s unique abilities as you reassemble your growing roster. War Zones can be played solo or with a group of up to four players as any Hero in your roster. Each mission dynamically scales based on the team size and player level.

Players in Marvel’s Avengers will also be able to customize Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in a number of ways. While each Super Hero will play true to their unique power sets, each will have the flexibility to play differently based on the gear you equip them with and the skills you enable, so no two player’s heroes will play in exactly the same way. Each hero has dynamic combo systems, Heroic moves, an intrinsic ability, and signature move sets to unlock and customize – many inspired by classic moves from the 80 years of history in all media, others crafted as originals just for this game.

Players also customize these iconic Super Heroes with classic, fan-favorite, and all-new original outfits inspired by over 80-years of Marvel history, including Iron Man’s suit from the 2014 Original Sin storyline, or Thor’s Donald Blake identity, which is a nod to an alias of Thor’s who first appeared in 1962’s Journey into Mystery issue 83.

Marvel’s Avengers is an ambitious game, starting with a global high-stakes race to rebuild the Avengers. But that’s just the beginning. To ensure a continuing heroic experience for all players, the narrative of Marvel’s Avengers expands, and threats escalate with each new post-release Super Hero, region and story arc delivered to players at no additional cost once they own the core game.

Finally, in case you missed it, earlier this week SQUARE ENIX announced that Marvel’s Avengers will be available on PlayStation®5 and Xbox Series X when the consoles launch in Holiday 2020. Players who own the current-gen version of the game will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version at no additional cost, regardless if players are moving from PlayStation® 4 to PlayStation 5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X. Those moving their saves to next-gen will transfer their player profiles and progression so they can pick up right where they left off. In addition, cross-gen play will be supported so PS5 players will be able to play with their friends on PS4 and Xbox Series X players will be connected with their friends on Xbox One.

Marvel’s Avengers will release simultaneously for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC on h September 4, 2020. The game is currently rated T (Teen) by the ESRB.

Marvel’s Avengers Hitting PS5 and Xbox Series X

Call me crazy, but while the Internet seems full of people who are down on Marvel’s Avengers (an upcoming action-RPG that looks to be part Marvel Ultimate Alliance and part…maybe Phantasy Star Online?) I’ve been pumped to play this game since they first unveiled the concept.

I don’t even care that much about the story mode, though it does sound a bit intriguing, but the co-operative online mode sounds amazing. Choose your hero, level them up, unlock new outfits and powers, then team up with your friends and their customized heroes to take down big bad boss fights? Sold.

There is some great news, especially for those who are looking at holding off on the next-gen consoles when they arrive. Now whether you’re sticking with your PS4 or Xbox One for a while because your wallet is hurting thanks to the impact of COVID-19, you want to wait and see what the launch lineups are like, or you just want to see what the difference between one being ‘more powerful’ and the other being ‘faster’ turns out to be in the real world before committing your money, the game will move across to the next-gen with you.

Buy it on PS4 and you can get a free upgrade to the PS5 version. Get it on Xbox One and the Series X version is yours. You can even carry across your saves, so you won’t lose progress AND you can play with previous gen players (on the same console family) so you won’t leave your friends behind (or be left behind) either.

All in all, that’s great news. Here’s the press release – expect to hear more on this one soon:

MARVEL’S AVENGERS CONFIRMED FOR PLAYSTATION 5 AND XBOX SERIES X

Buy the Game and Receive a Free Upgrade from PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X

Los Angeles, CA (June 22, 2020) – SQUARE ENIX® announced today that Marvel’s Avengers will be available on PlayStation®5 computer entertainment system and Xbox Series X when the consoles launch in Holiday 2020. Players who own the current-gen version of the game will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version at no additional cost, regardless if players are moving from PlayStation®4 to PlayStation®5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X. Those moving their saves to next-gen will transfer their player profiles and progression so they can pick up right where they left off.  In addition, cross-gen play will be supported so PS5 players will be able to play with their friends on PS4 and Xbox Series X players will be connected with their friends on Xbox One.

Featuring extremely fast load times, boosted resolution and fidelity, improved texturing and armor destruction, ray tracing, and more – Marvel’s Avengers will look and play great on next-gen systems. The PlayStation®5 experience will be seamless and dynamic, fully utilizing the ultra-high speed SSD, the PS5 DualSense advanced haptics, and immersive spatial audio. To fully customize their visual experience, PS5 will also provide players with their choice of Enhanced Graphics Mode or High Framerate mode.

We’ll have more details to share on Xbox Series X, Stadia, and PC specific features at a later time.

Those looking to learn more about Marvel’s Avengers on the PS5 can visit the PlayStation Blog where Gary Snethen, Crystal Dynamics Chief Technology Officer, details what players can expect from Marvel’s Avengers.

For more information on the game, co-op, and brand new gameplay content, be sure to tune into the Marvel’s Avengers War Table digital stream on June 24 at 10:00am PDT. The stream can be viewed from the PlayAvengers.com channel.

Square Enix Announces Pair of Special Editions For Marvel's Avengers

Marvel’s Avengers had a rocky debut, thanks to the leak of low-quality offscreen footage, but it’s grown on me since then and – with a delay to September 4th to polish it up – I’m increasingly looking forward to trying it out. Heading out into a Warzone mission with up to three friends, each with our own customized heroes? Sounds like it might be a good time to me.
Square Enix is looking to get fans to lock in pre-orders, with the release of some tempting special editions: Earth’s Mightiest Edition and Deluxe Edition, as well as a PS4-exclusive version.
The Deluxe Edition grants an exclusive Obsidian Outfit pack of six hero outfits, six exclusive Obsidian nameplates, and 72-hour early access to the game. This version, as with the standard version of the game, is available for digital pre-order now in the marketplace of your choice.
The Earth’s Mightiest Edition provides a 12″ Captain America PVC statue, a Hulk Bobblehead, a Mjolnir keychain, the Black Widow’s belt buckle, Iron Man’s prototype armor blueprint, and Kamala Khan’s honorary Avenger pin. Given the physical nature of the extras, obviously this one is going to be found in brick and mortar stores, but I haven’t seen them go live just yet.
Pre-order any edition of the game and you’ll also get guaranteed access to the upcoming beta, an exclusive nameplate, and the Marvel Legacy Outfit pack, which features costumes from the moments each hero first embraced their powers.
There’s also a PS4-exclusive Digital Edition that grants a Ms. Marvel emote, a dynamic theme, an exclusive Ms. Marvel nameplate, and 1,000 credits for customizing your hero. This edition also includes 72 hours early access to the game, and access to the PS4 beta.
Here’s the press release:

The Marvel’s Avengers Deluxe Edition includes an exclusive Obsidian Outfit pack (six hero outfits), six exclusive Obsidian nameplates, and 72-hour early access.
Marvel’s Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Edition features a full color 12” statue of Captain America. This edition also includes 72-hour early access when the game launches in September. PlayStation®4 players can also play the beta first when they pre-order any edition on PS4.

Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) Announced for Marvel's Avengers Game @ NYCC

Marvel’s Avengers game looks better every time it’s shown, and the New York Comic Con footage just released showcasing Kamala Khan (Ms Marvel) is no exception.
Ms. Marvel is a relatively new hero to the Marvel Universe, with the ability to alter her shape, size, and appearance. In Marvel’s Avengers she gains her powers during A-Day, the disaster during the game’s intro that ends with the disbanding of the Avengers, and – years later – is the impetus behind getting the team back together to solve the mysteries behind that fateful day.
Marvel’s Avengers is slated to hit PC, PS4, and Xbox One on May 15, 2020. It will also be hitting Google’s new Stadia streaming service the same day.

MS. MARVEL JOINS MARVEL’S AVENGERS

Marvel’s Rising Star Kamala Khan Sets Out to Expose AIM and Reassemble the Avengers

NEW YORK, NY (October 4, 2019) – Today at New York Comic Con 2019, Square Enix® and Crystal Dynamics® revealed that fan-favorite Kamala Khan is the latest playable Super Hero to be featured in Marvel’s Avengers. Co-created by G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona, Sana Amanat, and Stephen Wacker, in the comics, Kamala is an enthusiastic teenager who defends her hometown Jersey City as the costumed Ms. Marvel. First appearing in Captain Marvel #14 in August 2013, Kamala quickly captured the imagination of generations of True Believers, leading to her own monthly comic series in February 2014.

A self-avowed Avengers fan, in the game’s original story, Kamala Khan must apply her intellect, optimism, and unique abilities to the task of unravelling a global conspiracy and reassembling her personal heroes in time to stop a new secretive organization, Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM), before they unleash one of the greatest threats Earth has ever faced.

Players first encounter a young Kamala during A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Kamala is exposed to the mysterious Terrigen Mist, and finds herself developing extraordinary polymorphic powers, which she subsequently hides for years. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, Kamala uncovers a shocking conspiracy and embarks on a quest to reassemble the heroes she believes in and to become the hero she was destined to be.

Players begin the journey as Kamala Khan and learn the origins of her extraordinary powers. As the story expands, Kamala plays an essential role in bringing the disbanded Avengers back together. As each Super Hero is added to the roster, players must master all of their unique abilities, rebuild and customize the Avengers team to face increasingly growing threats only the Avengers together can defeat.

“An optimistic fan girl of the Avengers, Kamala Khan is the perfect character for the story we’re telling in Marvel’s Avengers,” said Shaun Escayg, Creative Director and Writer at Crystal Dynamics. “Telling our story of Kamala’s coming-of-age brings a fresh, hopeful perspective to the gameplay experience and her unique abilities as Ms. Marvel make her a character every person can relate to and will want to play. Kamala Khan is one of the unique characters that makes our game stand apart from any Avengers story experienced before.”

“Kamala is an inspired and perfectly fitting choice to join the ranks of, and reassemble, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,” said Bill Rosemann, VP of Creative at Marvel Games. “Perhaps more than any other character invented over the past decade, Ms. Marvel has not only charmed the hearts of longtime True Believers, but her unique mix of classic Marvel heroic elements and modern cultural relevancy has resulted in a headline-generating cultural icon.”

“It is a thrill to see Kamala in the Marvel’s Avengers game,” said Sana Amanat, VP of Content and Character Development at Marvel. “Crystal Dynamics has done a marvelous job of crafting a brand-new take on Kamala, while staying true to the spirit of her inspiring character, charismatic persona, and relatable purpose. Fans of the character are in for quite a ride, along with a few surprises, when Marvel’s Avengers makes its debut next year.”

“I think Kamala is a perfect fit for a game like this, since she sees the Marvel world the same way we do as fans and players,” said G. Willow Wilson, co-creator of Ms. Marvel. “Kamala allows us to imagine what we ourselves would do if we suddenly discovered we had superpowers and got to stand alongside our heroes in their time of greatest need.”

Marvel’s Avengers will release simultaneously for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, the Xbox One family of devices including Xbox One X, Stadia, and PC on May 15, 2020. The game is currently rated RP, rating pending by the ESRB.

Square Enix Releases Marvel's Avengers Official A-Day Gameplay Footage

Check out the official gameplay footage from Marvel’s Avengers, a much better quality version of footage that’s been floating around the Internet since it was first unveiled at San Diego Comic Con 2019. Keep in mind this is from the prologue, so don’t expect to see everything the game has to offer.
Marvel’s Avengers is a third-person action-adventure game that’s not set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but draws from that real-world-hero setting. The game opens five years after A-Day, the unveiling of a new high-tech Avengers Headquarter and helicarrier in San Francisco. A catastrophic accident (or sabotage?) during the unveiling ended with massive destruction and the Avengers, blamed for the events of A-Day, were disbanded and heroes outlawed. But now, five years later, the world needs heroes again…
Gamers will need to rebuild the Avengers through a single player campaign that rebuilds the roster and builds their powers, and then continue the game in a post-campaign world either solo or with friends in four-player co-operative play.
With hero customization in the form of unlockable skills, gear, and a selection of costumes from their comic past as well as newly designed ones, Marvel’s Avengers should keep comic fans happy for quite some time. The game has an ongoing narrative planned that spans years, including new heroes and game environments at no additional cost, so longevity shouldn’t be an issue at all.
Marvel’s Avengers is slated to hit PC, PS4, and Xbox One on May 15, 2020. It will also be hitting Google’s new Stadia streaming service the same day.
